What can I expect when driving on St. John?

First, it is important to remember that on St. John, you will drive on the left side of the road. If you’re not used to this, it can take a lot of concentration, so please drive carefully! Also, we ask that you always use appropriate seat belts both for yourself, and any children in the vehicle. We do not provide child car seats, but there are companies on the island that rent them to visitors. Finally, renters must be at least 25 years of age and must have a valid U.S. license. For foreign drivers, we can provide a temporary license for a small fee.

Where can I drive my rental?

There are certain restrictions on where you can travel and what you can do with your rented car. You can’t leave the island with our rentals; they must stay on St. John. Beaches are all designated national parks, so driving your rental car is not permitted there either. The use of our vehicle rentals for off-roading is likewise prohibited. The natural roadways on the island are already hilly and a bit treacherous, which is why four-wheel drive is necessary.

Do I need auto insurance?

Yes. According to US Virgin Islands legislation, all drivers must be protected by insurance in order to operate a vehicle there. To make sure you are protected to drive in the USVI, please get in touch with your insurance agent. You will need to obtain rental car coverage through a third-party travel insurance company if you don’t have automobile insurance or if your domestic insurance provider doesn’t cover you.
