The Virgin Islands are a beautiful, magical place any time of the year. But one of the things that makes spring on St. John extra-special is the opportunity to go whale watching. Every year, humpback whales migrate to our waters during the winter months, and then begin their northbound migration in March or April. To catch the peak of whale season, grab a rental car from St. John Car Rental and head off for the whale-watching adventure of a lifetime!

Whale Watching in St. John

All about Humpbacks

Each year, during the months of January, February and March, humpback whales can be seen swimming in the waters around St. John and the Virgin Islands. Typically, they make this appearance along with their calves before heading north to cooler waters in the summer. The calves need to spend their first few months in the warm waters of the Caribbean so they can build up a layer of blubber to keep them warm up north. Humpbacks are also very curious creatures; they are known to peek their heads above the water to observe visitors and show off by slapping the water with their fins and tail.

How to Whale Watch

For a chance to see these majestic creatures up close, a marine whale-watching tour is the best option. There are several companies on St. John that offers this service, and our expert staff will be happy to help once you arrive on the island. You can also whale watch from the shore. As you explore the island, keep an eye out for sprays of water as the whales blow spouts into the air. If you’re lucky, you might even see a whale leap out of the water!
